Flared and Tentacled

Dyeing for the upcoming Yarn in the City London marketplace in a few weeks has been halted for a bit as I seem to have damaged a tendon in my wrist. As those of you who follow mw on social media know, I am going a little crazy not being able to use my dominant hand!
Thought I would do another late blog post on a sewing project today to focus on achievements and try to get in a positive frame of mind.
This is something I made ages ago and wear constantly! After my amateur fitting struggles with the glorious Belladone dress I decided my next sewing project was going to be an easy one. As I need more skirts a second Pattern Runway Easy Gathered Skirt was just the ticket!
I’d purchased some of this fantastic cotton lawn from Village Haberdashery by Cotton & Steel called Tokyo Train Ride and wanted something not too over the top as the pattern is already so dramatic and I am very conscious that my predilection for novelty prints is starting to make me dress like a 5 year old. ;-P
A free PDF download, this has become my go-to skirt pattern as it is so simple, and yet exactly the type of skirt I like – full, but not too full, so it doesn’t take a lot of fabric, no zip but then no elastic on the front of the band, so falls elegantly at the front, and with POCKETS. The latter is a must for me as I am a hands-in-pockets kind of gal.
3 mods I have learned to do with this pattern are:
1) French seams. Turns out I am a sucker for beautifully finished seams.
2) Deeper pockets. I have modified the pocket bags as I found my phone kept falling out of these ones.
3) Thicker interfacing and elastic for a more structured waistband.
I was thrilled to realise, after the fact, that the skirt went perfectly with my new Tambourine in Neckinger green!
I’ve already made one of these skirts previously and have plans to make more with pleats, fuller skirt, different pockets, etc. as the pattern will be easily modified.
