On the needles – first projects of the year

While I’ve been doing a lot of ‘secret knitting’ lately for upcoming projects, I can finally share some new things I’ve cast on that aren’t in the vault!

At the Yarn in the City show last year I wandered over to the Pom Pom Quarterly stall, as I usually do, to try on the samples from the Issue 14: Autumn 2015 collection. While I’d liked the Maude jumper by Caarin Fleischmann when flipping through the magazine, trying it on created immediate LOVE. I knew I needed to knit this up, but didn’t get the time until after xmas this year.

The thick, juicy cables are so yummy, and the waffle stitch on the arms literally hugs you down the length of your arms, which and feels AMAZING. And while I love the look of turtlenecks, I don’t particularly care for squeezing my big head through them, so the looser, mock turtleneck on this design is perfect.

I cast on in Waltham Aran Walbrook teal and the yarn is perfect for the thick cables. Being my lazy old self, I’ve cast it on in the round and plan on doing the sleeves 2 at a time as well, to minimise finishing at the end. It has been a while since I knit cables and I’d forgotten how satisfying they are.

I just wish the jumper was done now, as the temperature is dropping this week and this sweater is guaranteed to be snuggly warm!

Unfortunately, I am having to be quite careful with my wrists as the gauge with this thick yarn is so tight with this project, so I’ve also cast on a light, airy Twilight Flowers in Twist fingering from Renée’s new collection – a top that I’ve been wanting since we did the photoshoot for the collection in October.

It was tough picking between these Twist Bluefaced Leicester brights for the jumper, but yellow won out as I have a skirt planning that will look great with it for spring. The winter weather has been so grey the last while that I really need a visual pick-me-up to keep me happy while I work, and sunny yellow seemed just the ticket! 😉

(ps. if you missed getting one of the 5 skeins of new Twist Phthalo blue in the shop update the other day, I’ve dyed some more of this which is now in shop!)

It is great trading off between these two hues every evening. I get a huge boost using 2 of my fav colours at the same time! Definitely something to look forward to at the end of a work day.
